Year 6 learn about Mexican holiday: Dia de los Muertos

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

Both Year 6 classes took part in a project on Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead. The pupils created an incredible poster outside their classrooms. This project links to art, math and history.

The Day of the Dead festival or Dia de los Muertos begins on October 31st and ends November 2nd with each day having a specific meaning. However it is NOT the Mexican version of Halloween.

The Mexican holiday is a period of celebration and remembrance for loved ones who have died.

November 1st is Dia de los Angelitos which translates to Day of the Little Angels – a day to commemorate the children that are no longer with us.

November 2nd is actually Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, where they honour adults that they have lost.

It is believed that on these days the souls return to earth to be with their loved ones.
