1,200 attend outdoor Cuckoo birthday concert

Cuckoo Hall celebrated its 70th birthday on Tuesday with a spectacular afternoon of singing  as each year group, from nursery to Year 6, chose a song from each of the past 7 decades, while a dozen of their classmates danced to the music in costumes and props on stage.

With the weather cooling down, 850 children joined over 400 parents and their families, as well as Board of Trustees members, for a show that included Elvis Presley’s Jail House Rock and the ever popular Wake me Up Before You Go Go by Wham.

Cuckoo Hall was built in 1948 and has served the local community since then, educating generations of young people from the area.

New headteacher from September, Nicky Ross, made a guest appearance. She came on stage and paid tribute to the school and its ambition in putting on such a major event. She also said:

"Cuckoo Hall is a brilliant place. The children are amazing. I look forward to seeing you all soon and starting as your new headteacher."

Her 'Majesty the Queen' shocked the large crowd by arriving at the school and wishing everyone a very happy birthday.

CHAT Academies Chief Executive Officer, Marino Charalambous, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Dr Donald Graham, and Sue Rubenstein, Chair of the school's Rapid Improvement Board, also congratulated the school for putting on such an amazing event. The head boy and head girl cut a birthday cake to loud applause.

This day belonged very much to the children who sang their hearts out with their teachers and teaching assistants.

As one parent said at the end: 'These young people will always remember this very special day'.
